About this

Edo-period artifact

An authentic 17th- to 18th-century Japanese bone or ivory card case from a private collection. Three to four inches long — sized for one hand or the sleeve of a kimono.

Held meishi (calling cards) and correspondence slips, exchanged in the formal visiting practice of the merchant and samurai classes. From the same Edo-period world that produced netsuke and pipe holders — functional art with weight to it.

Condition: Mint overall, with one honest defect — a small chip on the interior where the upper lip meets the bottom. Not visible until opened.
